Why Does AISD Want To Close Some Central Austin Schools?

Why has AISD targeted Barton Hills, Brooke, Joslin, Oak Springs, Ortega, Pease, Sanchez and Zilker elementary schools and Pearce Middle School for possible closure?  It’s cost savings from the upkeep on old schools and operating at well below full capacity for some, says the Statesman.

Like teachers grading an assignment, the Austin school district facilities task force used several criteria in evaluating candidates for possible attendance boundary changes and campus closures.

“Can you move the fewest students, achieve the highest utilization, save the most money and reduce capital requirements at the same time?” task force co-chairwoman Janet Mitchell said in explaining how the committee of 72 members settled on a list of schools that could be closed. “That’s what we were trying to solve for.”

That rubric hasn’t kept community members from challenging the early recommendations to close Barton Hills, Brooke, Joslin, Oak Springs, Ortega, Pease, Sanchez and Zilker elementary schools and Pearce Middle School.

Trustees are slated to vote on the plan in March.
